60 Minutes: The Blowout

For those who missed it, about 2 months ago, 60 Minutes ran a report about the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion that killed eleven crewmen and ignited a massive fireball that could be seen from as far as 35 miles away. The resulting fire could not be extinguished and, on April 22, 2010, Deepwater Horizon sank, leaving the oil well gushing at the sea floor and causing the largest offshore oil spill in United States history, and it’s still gushing.

Most of the 60 Minutes broadcast consists of testimony from Mike Williams, one of the last crew members to escape the inferno. It also contains an interview with Dr. Bob Bea, a professor of engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Bea is considered to be one of the world’s leading authorities on oil rig disasters. He has investigated more than 20 of them and his resume includes investigating the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster for NASA and the Hurricane Katrina disaster for the National Science Foundation.

I’ll let the testimony of Mike Williams and Dr. Bob Bea speak for itself:

This is another video I saw linked to someone’s facebook which had some interesting, yet blurry, footage of the spill: http://www.facebook.com/#!/video/video.php?v=138999366114177&ref=mf

Hope those work for ya. Talk soon and take care.
