Other than fighting health-care reform, do you know what else many of George W. Bush’s conservative Republican bigwigs are doing right now?
They are working as lobbyists for a giant energy company controlled by a trio of the world’s largest private-equity funds.
From the Wall Street Journal:
“Joel Kaplan, former deputy chief of staff under President George W. Bush serves as the company’s lobbyist and chief.”
“Their presence underscores just how critical government relations are for utilities, whose fortunes are closely tied to rules set by state and federal regulators. Utilities face restrictions on their waste stream, including carbon-dioxide emissions, that could greatly increase operating costs and put a squeeze on earnings. As a large coal burner, Energy Futures Holdings Corp. is especially vulnerable.”
Anyone who truly thinks that utility companies are fighting FOR limits on carbon-dioxide emissions has either been in a coma for the last 20 years, or has been sniffing too many gas fumes.
