Population Growth Statistics

Hans Rosling is professor of International Health at Karolinska Institutet, the medical university in Stockholm, Sweden. He is a member of the International Group of the Swedish Academy of Science and of the Global Agenda Network of the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, and his 20 years of research on global health makes him one of the world’s leading experts on the links between economy and health.

Among his many accomplishments, he has been adviser to the World Health Organization and UNICEF, he co-founded M├ędecines sans Frontiers in Sweden and he published a textbook on Global Health.

I provided a link to one of his many award winning lectures in a previous post titled State of the Art Statistics:

Here is a link to another of Hans Rosling’s truly eye opening lectures where he uses simple household objects to explain the very real problem of population growth and how best to solve it:

60 Minutes: The Blowout

For those who missed it, about 2 months ago, 60 Minutes ran a report about the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion that killed eleven crewmen and ignited a massive fireball that could be seen from as far as 35 miles away. The resulting fire could not be extinguished and, on April 22, 2010, Deepwater Horizon sank, leaving the oil well gushing at the sea floor and causing the largest offshore oil spill in United States history, and it’s still gushing.

Most of the 60 Minutes broadcast consists of testimony from Mike Williams, one of the last crew members to escape the inferno. It also contains an interview with Dr. Bob Bea, a professor of engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Bea is considered to be one of the world’s leading authorities on oil rig disasters. He has investigated more than 20 of them and his resume includes investigating the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster for NASA and the Hurricane Katrina disaster for the National Science Foundation.

I’ll let the testimony of Mike Williams and Dr. Bob Bea speak for itself:
